Boddhisatya Tarafdar
Professional Banker | Independent Public Historian | Heritage Enthusiast | Documentary Creator
Exploring the past. Preserving heritage. Telling stories that matter.
I am Boddhisatya Tarafdar, a banker by profession and an independent public historian, student of Museology, a heritage enthusiast, committed to voluntary works of exploring, documenting and communicating the many stories that have shaped India and its civilisational journey.
I have been in the banking industry since 2008 and have worked in various places in India and in various job profiles. I did my MBA in Finance and Marketing, MA in Journalism and Mass Communication, MA in History and also studied Museum Studies. As History has always been my passion, I have been a keen reader of various books, journals on Indian History during my free time or in holidays all along my student life and professional life. My research and voluntary works lies at the intersection of History, Museology, Heritage, Public History and Digital Storytelling. I believe that history should not remain confined to textbooks, archives and academic institutions. It should be accessible to everyone presented through museums, exhibitions, documentaries, digital platforms, research, writing and meaningful public engagement.
My particular interest is in bringing lesser-known and underrepresented chapters of Indian history into public consciousness. From the revolutionary movement and India’s struggle for independence to the life and legacy of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and the Indian National Army, from Bengal’s revolutionary heritage to India’s wider cultural and civilisational history, I seek to investigate the past through evidence, interpretation and storytelling.
My Vision
For me, heritage is not simply about old buildings, artefacts or monuments. Heritage is memory, tt is identity, it is the living connection between generations. Museums, therefore, can become much more than repositories of objects. They can become spaces for dialogue, discovery, education and collective memory. This philosophy has inspired my interest in Public History and Digital Museology using contemporary technologies and creative storytelling to make historical knowledge more accessible to wider audiences.
BRIL Virtual Museum
One of my major voluntary academic initiatives is the Bengal Revolution for Indian Liberation (BRIL) Virtual Museum, a digital museum project dedicated to documenting and presenting the history of India’s revolutionary freedom movement, with particular emphasis on Bengal and its revolutionary heritage. The project seeks to create an immersive digital space where historical personalities, events, photographs, documents, places and stories can be brought together for researchers, students and the general public.
Beyond the Museum
My work extends beyond museum-making, through articles, research, documentaries, podcasts and digital storytelling, I explore historical subjects and contemporary questions surrounding heritage, memory and society.
I am particularly interested in asking:
How can we make history meaningful to the present generation?
How can museums become more engaging in the digital age?
How can forgotten stories find their way back into public memory?
These questions continue to shape my work.
Research. Remember. Reinterpret.
This website brings together my different areas of work—research, writing, museums, heritage, documentaries, podcasts and ideas—in one place. It is intended not merely as a personal portfolio, but as a platform for historical exploration and public engagement. I invite you to explore the stories, ideas and projects presented here—and to join me in discovering the extraordinary histories that continue to shape who we are.
Because the past is not gone.
It lives in our memories, our heritage and our identity.
And understanding it is essential to understanding ourselves.
